About

I started performing film photography early in life. After a brief hiatus to raise children I came back to digital photography and writing. After working in website development and digital news, my interests moved towards training AI.

As someone whose worked for a company that trains AI, I know the difficulty there is in finding clean images that are human created, without AI modifications to use for training.

With AI in it’s early stages it would not be prudent to us AI to train itself. You could ask children to teach other children but you would have to ensure that the knowledge levels varied enough to make a significant improvement for the child being taught. The same principle applies to teaching AI.

Part of training AI, involves constantly testing its knowledge. By using images we can test the models understanding of what it is being shown. Anyone who has seen AI generated images, knows that they are not realistic and often contain gross flaws. Humans use photographs primarily to help test AI for understanding, not to recreate art and photography.

By providing clean high quality images of everyday scenes and objects we can determine what AI systems are learning and test its knowledge before implementing it in services to help humans. Currently we use AI a lot more than we know. It’s only recently that people have really become aware of all the uses AI has.

Here’s a great article on the history of AI: What is the history of artificial intelligence (AI)?
